Indian equity markets opened lower on Friday, March 27, amid weak global cues. In early trade, the Sensex declined by more than 800 points, while the Nifty 50 index traded near the 23,100 level. The pressure on markets was already indicated by GIFT Nifty futures, which were down 197 points at 23,081 at 7 am, signalling a weak opening.
Markets were closed on Thursday on account of Ram Navami. In the previous session on Wednesday, benchmarks had ended higher, with both the Nifty 50 and Sensex gaining over 1.5 percent. The decline on Friday reflected the impact of global signals rather than an unexpected development.
Global Markets Weigh on Sentiment
Asian markets traded lower on Friday morning. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index declined by around 0.94 percent, while South Korea’s Kospi index was down approximately 2.7 percent. The weakness followed declines in US markets, which influenced investor sentiment across Asia.
US markets ended lower on Thursday. The S&P 500 fell about 1.74 percent, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.01 percent, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.38 percent. Selling pressure in technology stocks contributed to the decline.
Global uncertainty continues to persist, particularly regarding the evolving situation between the United States and Iran. The lack of clarity around a ceasefire has increased caution among investors.
US-Iran Developments Add to Uncertainty
Volatility in international markets has been influenced by ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran. US President Donald Trump has deferred a potential strike on Iran’s energy infrastructure by 10 days, although the situation remains unclear.
He also stated that discussions with Iran are progressing in the right direction. Separately, reports indicated that Iran has allowed 10 oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, though there has been no official confirmation from Iran.
Such geopolitical uncertainty typically impacts equity markets, as investors tend to reduce risk exposure and shift towards safer investment options.
Crude Oil Prices Ease
Crude oil prices declined during the Asian trading session. Brent crude fell around 1.26 percent to $106.65 per barrel. The decline in oil prices could ease inflationary pressures, although investors remain focused on global geopolitical developments.
Sustained softness in oil prices may be beneficial for the Indian economy, given the country’s dependence on oil imports.
IPO Market Activity Continues
Activity in the primary market continued on Friday. The IPO of Emmec Technologies opened for subscription, with the company aiming to raise Rs 31.75 crore through the issue.
Meanwhile, it was the final day to subscribe to the IPOs of Aamir Chand Jagdish Kumar (Exports), Powerica, and Sai Parenterals. As of the second day, these issues were subscribed 1.55 times, 0.03 times, and 0.42 times, respectively. Investor participation in the IPO market remains active, although prevailing market volatility may influence subscription trends.
