The Indian stock market witnessed volatile trading on Thursday, with the BSE Sensex closing marginally higher while the NSE Nifty 50 ended lower for the third consecutive trading session at 24,395.85.
The BSE Sensex closed 113.61 points higher at 78,079.96, while the NSE Nifty 50 fell 40.10 points to close at 24,395.85. Selling in metal and private banking stocks put pressure on the market, while buying in real estate and consumer durables helped limit the decline.
A total of 2,088 stocks advanced, while 2,052 declined, indicating buying and selling across selected stocks and sectors rather than a one-sided market trend.
The Sensex and Nifty ended the session in different directions. Gains in some large-cap stocks included in the Sensex helped keep the index in positive territory, while weakness in metal, banking and some other heavyweight stocks weighed on the Nifty 50.

The Nifty Metal index fell nearly 1 percent on Thursday, making it one of the weakest-performing sectors. Hindalco Industries was among the biggest losers in the Nifty 50, declining 2.99 percent. UltraTech Cement fell 1.56 percent, while Grasim Industries declined 1.54 percent.
The Nifty Private Bank index fell around 0.5 percent. ICICI Bank declined 1.74 percent, adding to pressure on the banking sector. SBI Life also fell 0.98 percent and was among the key Nifty losers.
The Nifty Realty index gained around 1 percent, making it one of the better-performing sectors. The Consumer Durables index also rose around 0.45 percent.
Tata Consumer was the best-performing stock among the major Nifty 50 constituents, rising 2.69 percent. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles gained 1.92 percent, while NTPC and Hindustan Unilever each advanced 1.41 percent. Shriram Finance rose 1.35 percent.
