Stock Market Update: The Indian stock market witnessed a weak opening on Monday, December 8, 2025. In the absence of any major triggers in the domestic market, investors remained cautious, which was reflected in the major indices. The Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex opened around the 85,603 level, down 109 points or 0.13 percent from its previous close. Meanwhile, the Nifty50 opened at the 26,153 level.
Around 10 AM, the market decline intensified, with the Sensex falling 314 points or 0.37 percent to reach the 85,398 level. The Nifty50 also weakened by 98 points, settling at the 26,088 level. This continuous decline indicates that investor sentiment in the market remained cautious and volatile.
Sectoral Indices and Broad Market Performance
After the market opened on Monday, NSE's sectoral indices showed mixed trends. Some sectors registered slight gains, while others faced increased pressure. Looking at the Sensex heatmap, several companies performed well, but many prominent stocks ended in the red. The picture of gainers and losers became clear in the early trading session.
The broad market also showed weakness. The Nifty Midcap Index fell by 0.14 percent, while the Nifty Smallcap Index was down by 0.22 percent. Among sectoral indices, Realty, PSU Bank, and Pharma indices suffered the most, declining by 0.2 to 0.4 percent. On the other hand, Nifty Metal rose by 0.2 percent, and Nifty IT showed a marginal gain of 0.1 percent. Thus, the market experienced mixed activity in the main stocks of Sensex and Nifty, as well as in the mid and small-cap sectors.
Weak Opening for the Rupee
The Indian Rupee opened weaker against the dollar on Monday. The domestic currency started trading at 90.06/$ compared to Friday's closing of 89.98/$. The 8-paisa weakening of the rupee clearly indicates sustained demand for the dollar in the foreign exchange market and the rupee trading in a weak mode.
Performance of Asian Markets
Asian markets displayed mixed trends. China's CSI 300 rose by 0.48 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell by 0.07 percent. Investors are awaiting China's November trade data. Japan's Nikkei declined by 0.32 percent as the third-quarter GDP contraction was steeper than initial estimates. According to official data, Japan's annualized GDP decreased by 2.3 percent from July to September, against economists' expectations of a 2 percent decline. South Korea's KOSPI gained 0.07 percent.
US Markets Overview
US stock markets closed with gains on Friday. The Dow Jones rose by 0.22 percent, the S&P 500 by 0.19 percent, and the Nasdaq by 0.31 percent. The primary driver for this rally was the weaker-than-expected September Core Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) price index data, which provides significant signals ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy meeting this week. This data instilled confidence in investors that the Federal Reserve is unlikely to make significant rate changes in its upcoming policy meeting.
Eyes on IndiGo
IndiGo's shares will be under particular focus in the Indian market on Monday. According to legal experts, if the DGCA concludes that the airline deliberately did not maintain sufficient pilots and failed to comply with new flight duty rules, the company could face stringent regulatory action and hefty fines. This has led to caution and volatility among investors regarding IndiGo's stock.
