Garhwa: A woman in Garhwa district of Jharkhand had her bank account emptied due to cyber fraud. The incident, which occurred in 2025, involved scammers contacting the woman under the pretext of helping her avail benefits under the PM Kisan Yojana. They then scanned her eyes and withdrew ₹10,000 from her account. This fraud did not require an OTP or card. Experts say that this type of cyber fraud is rapidly increasing, taking advantage of vulnerabilities in biometric and banking systems, so people need to be vigilant.
A New Method of Cyber Fraud
In Jharkhand's Garhwa district, scammers emptied a woman's bank account without the need for an OTP or card. The scammers lured the woman with the promise of benefits under the PM Kisan Yojana and scanned her eyes, withdrawing ₹10,000 from her account. This incident points to the evolving methods of cybercriminals, emphasizing the need for public vigilance.
According to cyber experts, criminals exploit vulnerabilities in biometric and banking systems in such frauds. Account holders are advised not to share personal information on unknown calls, messages, or emails and to use multi-factor authentication. Furthermore, it is crucial to be cautious of individuals asking for money in the name of any government scheme or offer.
Bank Account Emptied by Eye Scan
According to media reports, the scammers contacted the woman claiming they would help her get benefits from the PM Kisan Yojana. Under this pretext, they scanned her eyes and used this information to withdraw money from her bank account. The woman later discovered the fraud when she visited the bank.
How Was Money Withdrawn Without OTP?
Nowadays, most bank accounts are linked to Aadhaar cards. Because of this, money can also be withdrawn through biometric scans. However, there is a limit on such transactions. In this case, the scammers obtained the account information from the woman's Aadhaar card and withdrew the money by scanning her eyes.
Security Measures and Precautions
To avoid such fraud, use your Aadhaar card carefully and do not share your Aadhaar number with any unknown person or organization. Use a virtual Aadhaar number when needed, which can be generated from the UIDAI website. Also, lock your biometric information so that no one else can use your fingerprints and iris scan.
