Kamal Haasan Takes Rajya Sabha Oath in Tamil, Affirming Language Pride

Kamal Haasan's Rajya Sabha Oath in Tamil Resonates with Language Pride. Seat Secured with DMK Support. The House Echoes with Applause, Charting a New Course for Alliance Politics.

Kamal Haasan: Renowned actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party leader, Kamal Haasan, took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha on July 25th. He read the oath in Tamil, which echoed through the house with applause. By taking the oath in Tamil, Kamal Haasan not only demonstrated his respect for his language but also affirmed his commitment to regional languages.

Expressing Pride and Respect After the Oath

After taking the oath, while speaking to reporters in the Parliament building complex, the 69-year-old actor said that he felt very proud and honored. Kamal Haasan stated that this opportunity brings a great responsibility for him, and he will fulfill his duties with utmost dedication.

Rajya Sabha Seat Secured with DMK Support

Kamal Haasan received this Rajya Sabha seat in return for the DMK's support. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Haasan's party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, supported the DMK. Following this political cooperation, the DMK sent him to the Upper House.

Political Alliance

A formal political alliance has now been formed between Kamal Haasan and the DMK. Political analysts believe that the DMK and MNM may jointly contest the Tamil Nadu assembly elections to be held in 2026. This alliance could create new equations in state politics.

On June 6, Kamal Haasan filed his nomination papers at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat. During this time, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan, MDMK's Vaiko, and Tamil Nadu Congress chief Selva Perunthagai, along with several other senior leaders were present with him. This was a clear indication that Haasan has the full support of the ruling alliance in Tamil Nadu.

Talk of Common Man Politics

In an interview, Kamal Haasan said that he has come into politics not as a star but as a common man. He also clarified that his party is neither right-wing nor left-wing. He said that the meaning of the word 'Maiam' is center, i.e., balance. His party is focused on solving the problems of the general public, and he presents himself as the third option for Tamil Nadu.

Journey from Cinema to Parliament

Kamal Haasan has had a long film career spanning decades, and he has played many memorable roles in Tamil cinema. Even after entering politics, he has given prominence to issues related to the public. Now, after reaching Parliament, he can raise those issues at the national level that are related to South India, especially Tamil Nadu.
