Kangana Ranaut Faces Setback as High Court Dismisses Defamation Case Plea

Kangana Ranaut has suffered a setback in the defamation case from the High Court. The court dismissed the petition, and the trial will now resume in the Bathinda court. The case is related to a statement made during the farmers' movement.

Kangana Ranaut: Bollywood actress and BJP MP from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut, has suffered a major setback from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court has dismissed her petition seeking to quash the defamation complaint filed against her. Following this decision, the trial, which has been stalled since 2021, will now resume. However, Kangana still has the option to appeal to the Supreme Court.

What is the whole matter?

This dispute arose during the farmers' movement in December 2020 and January 2021. At that time, many discussions were taking place on social media regarding the farmers' movement across the country. Kangana Ranaut also tweeted on this issue. In one post, she shared a picture of an elderly woman from Bathinda, Mohinder Kaur, claiming that women participating in the movement were being paid to attend.

Mohinder Kaur's reaction and case filed

After Kangana's post, there was outrage among the people of Punjab. In particular, Mohinder Kaur considered it an attack on her reputation. In January 2021, she filed a defamation complaint against Kangana Ranaut in a court in Bathinda. Kaur's contention was that Kangana made a misleading statement without verification, which led to her being humiliated in society.

Kangana's clarification and petition in High Court

Kangana Ranaut had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court to get this complaint dismissed. Her counsel argued in court that the comments she made on social media were not targeted at any particular individual. They also argued that there was no malice in the post and that it was a general opinion.

High Court's decision and resumption of trial

However, the High Court rejected Kangana's arguments and clarified that the points raised in the complaint would be considered during the trial. The court stated that whether Kangana's comments fall under the category of defamation or not will only become clear through the trial. In this way, the court has lifted the stay on the trial and ordered the resumption of the case hearing.
