Kudmi Tribe Protest: In Saraikela district, Jharkhand, people from the Kudmi community staged a major protest on the Howrah-Mumbai railway line, demanding their inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. Near Sini Railway Station, protestors began an indefinite sit-in on the rail tracks. During this, several women were present with their infants, highlighting the seriousness and collective nature of the movement.
Protestors stated that the Kudmi community was previously included in the ST list, but was removed from it under some conspiracy. The agitators are resolved to continue their fight for their rights, a demand they have placed before the central and state governments for years, but no concrete action has been taken to date.
Clash between Police and Protesters
During the protest, a tense situation arose between the police and the protestors. The police had imposed Section 144 in the entire area and claimed that no protestor would be allowed to reach the tracks. Despite this, protestors managed to reach the railway line. Due to this intense movement, rail services were completely disrupted, and many trains on the Howrah-Mumbai route were halted. The police attempted to control the crowd, but had to retreat in the face of the protestors' enthusiasm and determination.
Rail Roko Movement
According to local residents, this movement began under the name ‘Rail Teko’ and has now been declared indefinite. Protestors are continuously struggling not only to stop trains but also to fight for their rights. Navin Mahto, who participated in this sit-in, stated that their movement is peaceful, but they cannot wait any longer.
Participation of Women and Children
A notable aspect of this innovative initiative was the large number of women and children participating in the sit-in. Many women were present on the tracks with their young children, clearly demonstrating the seriousness of the movement and its social support. Local residents are describing it as a peaceful struggle, but it remains a challenging situation for railway officials and the police.
Administrative Challenge
Local railway officials reported that rail traffic has been completely disrupted, causing many trains on the Howrah-Mumbai route to halt and inconveniencing passengers. The administration made every effort to keep the situation under control, but despite the relatively small number of protestors, their determination and resolve are forcing the police to retreat.
