Manchester United Retain Bruno Fernandes as Captain After Como Defeat

Manchester United will not take disciplinary action against captain Bruno Fernandes after his comments on Michael Carrick’s tactics following the 4-1 defeat to Como. Wayne Rooney has criticised the players and called for clarity on Carrick’s future.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes will retain the captaincy, with the club deciding against disciplinary action despite questions over head coach Michael Carrick’s tactics following the team’s 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League.

The Portuguese midfielder said after the match that identifying flaws in the team’s tactics and making selection decisions when necessary were the responsibility of the head coach and his coaching staff. Fernandes’ comments were widely interpreted as a challenge to Carrick’s authority. The remarks came just eight days after United defender Lisandro Martinez criticised the club’s football director, Jason Wilcox, and the changes made to the squad during the summer.

There is also some sympathy within Manchester United for Fernandes’ position. He gave around 10 media interviews after the match against Como, having been substituted midway through the second half. Although some of his comments caused frustration, his anger was not considered entirely unjustified given the manner of the defeat.

The loss to Como was regarded as one of Manchester United’s worst performances in European competition. The club has therefore decided neither to remove Fernandes as captain nor to punish him for his remarks. However, it remains uncertain whether he will be included in the starting XI for Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Carrick is expected to face questions about the controversy at his pre-match press conference on Friday, scheduled for around 6 pm Indian Standard Time. His comments are expected to draw attention amid the team’s recent performances and questions surrounding his position as head coach.

Former England striker Wayne Rooney expressed b dissatisfaction with Manchester United’s performance against Como. He said he was shocked by the result and found it difficult to believe. According to Rooney, his concern about the situation at Old Trafford is greater than it has been for a long time.

Although Rooney knows Carrick well personally and understands why players might question a coach’s tactics, he criticised members of the squad, including Fernandes and Martinez. Speaking on the United Stand podcast, Rooney described the players as selfish and said they were blaming others instead of accepting responsibility.

Rooney said Martinez’s comments had already made him fear that the dressing-room atmosphere could deteriorate. Following Fernandes’ remarks, he believes other players could also speak publicly about their views. According to Rooney, players must take responsibility for their performances on the pitch and remain accountable to the team, coaching staff and supporters.

Rooney compared Fernandes’ current performances with those of last season, when the midfielder was named PFA and FWA Player of the Year. Fernandes also set a record for the most assists in a single Premier League season.

Rooney said Fernandes and other players should focus on their own performances before criticising others.

Amid Manchester United’s poor results, Rooney called on the club’s board to adopt a clear position on Carrick’s future. He said the head coach should now stand firmly behind his position rather than simply remain quiet. Rooney referred to his own experiences managing Plymouth and Birmingham City, saying he had faced similar situations at those clubs.

According to Rooney, poor performances by players can ultimately put a coach’s job at risk. He warned that Carrick could bear the consequences of the team’s current situation if he did not defend his position.

Pressure on Carrick has increased following the defeat to Como. Nevertheless, he will remain in charge of Manchester United for Sunday’s match against Bournemouth. The team’s performances, the players’ conduct and Carrick’s response have become key issues for the club.
