National Award-winning actor Manoj Bajpayee has said that while portraying a character on screen, its age matters less than its depth, layers and relevance to the story.
Character preparation begins with the script
Bajpayee said preparation for a role begins with the script and continues to evolve during shooting through experiences with co-actors and changing circumstances. He said actors do not need to be overly concerned about portraying characters of a particular age.
He compared characters to the layers of an onion, saying every character has multiple layers, and understanding and presenting those layers one by one is a challenge for an actor.
Understanding the character beyond dialogues
Bajpayee said his preparation is not limited to memorising dialogues or scenes. He studies the character's complete background so that its behaviour and personality appear natural on screen.
According to him, every character has a backstory, characterisation and specific psychology. He identifies these elements from the script and develops a detailed background for the role. He also considers grey shades, nuances and different emotional levels of a character.
Acting continues during the shoot
Bajpayee said the actual work of acting continues after shooting begins. The environment on set, the director's working method and the energy of co-actors can influence a performance, sometimes requiring small adjustments.
He said unexpected situations can emerge during filming that cannot be fully predicted during preparation, making it important for an actor to adapt. The energy and style of a co-actor can also influence a performance, while circumstances on set and interactions with other actors can reveal new layers and ideas.
He described acting as a process that continues throughout the shoot, with new experiences sometimes leading to changes and improvements in a role.
Manoj Bajpayee discusses 'Last Man in Tower'
Bajpayee is currently promoting 'Last Man in Tower'. Divya Dutta is his co-star in the film, which is directed by Ben Rekhi.
During a promotional event in Mumbai, Bajpayee, Dutta and Rekhi were present. The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on 11 September 2026.
Bajpayee also compared some shooting experiences to travelling on an unknown road. He said the uncertainty can initially feel slightly frightening because the future is unknown, but once an actor becomes part of the process, the experience becomes enjoyable. He said this uncertainty makes acting interesting and that new experiences on set can take a role in a different direction.
