UP News: A major accident occurred near Shahganj Gate in Mathura's Govind Nagar area on Sunday afternoon. Parts of one- and two-story houses collapsed due to a landslide. Several laborers and local residents present in these houses at the time of the accident were trapped under the debris. Three deaths have been confirmed so far, with several injuries. Relief and rescue operations are underway.
How did the accident happen?
Near Shahganj Gate are years-old earthen mounds on which several brick houses have been built. During the rainy season, the soil of these mounds often becomes loose, increasing the risk of landslides. To prevent this, locals were constructing a retaining wall around these mounds. This work had been ongoing for the past week. Around 12:15 pm on Sunday, the soil suddenly collapsed, causing parts of more than half a dozen nearby houses to fall.
People trapped under debris, rescue operations underway
Besides laborers involved in the wall construction, some local residents present in the houses were also trapped under the debris. Upon receiving information, police and fire department teams immediately arrived at the scene. The district administration deployed JCB machines for relief work. Currently, six JCB machines and dozens of rescue workers are engaged in removing the debris.
Three deaths confirmed
Three deaths have been confirmed in this horrific accident. The deceased include 33-year-old Tota Ram Saini, son of Bajrang Lal Saini. Additionally, 6-year-old Yashoda and her 3-year-old sister Kavya also died. Both girls were daughters of Mohan Lal, a resident of Gautam Pada, Vrindavan, who were visiting their maternal grandparents.
Woman and child rescued from debris
After strenuous efforts, the rescue team safely extracted a woman and a child from under the debris and sent them to the hospital for treatment. They are receiving treatment at a local hospital. The local administration and police are diligently engaged in relief work.
Administration and relief agencies on the spot
Mathura's DM Chandra Prakash Singh and SSP Shlok Kumar personally visited the site to assess the relief operations. They stated that NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) teams have also been called in. Given the depth and spread of the debris, the relief work is taking time. They appealed to people to maintain restraint and cooperate with the administration.
Fear among locals
Following the accident, there is an atmosphere of fear in the surrounding areas. Local residents say the administration was aware of the condition of these mounds beforehand, but no concrete steps were taken in time. Many also reported that minor landslides had occurred previously but were ignored.
