Residents and traders in Ward-62's Maya Bazar have alleged that sanitation services are concentrated around the Municipal Corporation office while surrounding lanes, markets and residential areas remain neglected. They claim garbage has accumulated at multiple locations, drains are clogged with waste, and sewage is flowing onto roads, causing foul odours and disrupting daily life.
According to local residents, the roads and premises in front of the Municipal Corporation office are cleaned regularly, but conditions deteriorate in the areas behind the office. They alleged that garbage has not been collected from several lanes for an extended period and that delayed drain cleaning has resulted in wastewater overflowing onto roads.
Residents said the problem becomes more severe during the rainy season, when sewage mixes with rainwater and causes waterlogging across the area.
Local traders and residents alleged that continuous sewage overflow has made it difficult for pedestrians to move through the area, while two-wheeler riders face the risk of slipping. They said children and elderly people are affected the most. Traders also claimed that foul odours at several locations have reduced customer footfall, resulting in financial losses for small businesses.
Residents said they have submitted repeated complaints to the concerned authorities and public representatives, but no permanent solution has been implemented. They alleged that temporary cleaning is carried out at some locations, but conditions return to the previous state within a few days. They have demanded regular sanitation across the area, timely drain cleaning and repairs to the sewer network.
Health experts said that exposed sewage and accumulated garbage can contribute to the spread of infectious diseases. They stated that increased mosquito breeding may raise the risk of dengue, malaria and chikungunya, while polluted surroundings can also lead to respiratory problems and other infections. They said timely sanitation measures and proper maintenance of the sewer system are necessary.
Residents said that during the rainy season, blocked sewers allow wastewater to reach the fronts of homes and shops, forcing people to pass through contaminated water. They added that the problem has persisted for years without a permanent resolution.
People in the area have urged the Municipal Corporation to conduct sanitation drives across the entire Maya Bazar area rather than limiting cleaning to the vicinity of its office. They have also demanded sewer line cleaning, repairs to damaged drains, regular garbage collection and improvements to the drainage system.
Residents and traders said they are awaiting improved sanitation services and urged the administration to address the sewer and sanitation issues promptly, stating that conditions could worsen during the rainy season if corrective measures are not taken.
