Meerut man arrested for allegedly electrocuting wife over dowry demands

A married woman was killed in Meerut after her husband allegedly electrocuted her over unmet dowry demands, police said. The accused was arrested shortly after the incident.

According to police, the woman had been married a few years ago and had faced harassment over dowry since the marriage. Her family alleged that the husband repeatedly demanded additional dowry and subjected her to physical assault and mental harassment when the demands were not met. On the day of the incident, an argument broke out in the house over the issue, after which the accused allegedly electrocuted the woman, leading to her death.

After the incident, the accused attempted to portray the death as an accident. Police began an investigation after receiving information about the woman’s death under suspicious circumstances. During the probe, marks found on the body and statements from family members raised suspicion. During questioning, the accused confessed to the crime, police said.

Police have taken custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death. A case has been registered under sections related to dowry harassment and murder, and further legal action is under way. Officials said the possible involvement of other individuals is also being examined.

The woman’s parental family has expressed anger over the incident, stating that dowry was given according to their means at the time of marriage but that their daughter continued to face harassment. They have demanded strict punishment for the accused.

Local residents said cases of harassment of women in the name of dowry continue to surface. Police said the accused remains in custody and legal proceedings are continuing.
