Multiple Earthquakes Strike Argentina, Turkey, and Indonesia; Limited Damage Reported
Last Updated: 1 hour ago

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Argentina, while tremors of 5.0 magnitude in Turkey and 5.5 magnitude in Indonesia were recorded. In all locations, surface damage remained limited, and there were no casualties.

Earthquake: Argentina's land was shaken by b seismic tremors on Thursday. A 5.7 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale occurred in Santiago del Estero province at 21:37 UTC. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake's epicenter was 29 kilometers west of El Hoyo city in northern Argentina and at a depth of 571 kilometers (354 miles) below the Earth's surface. Due to the significant depth, the likelihood of widespread surface damage was low, and this earthquake caused no loss of life or property.

This type of earthquake is often classified as a deep earthquake event. Its effects are felt on the surface, but the destruction remains limited.

Tension Between the Nazca Plate and the South American Plate

According to the USGS, this earthquake was associated with the subduction process of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate. This region is known for deep and powerful seismic events. Experts explain that the stress generated by the subduction of the Nazca Plate often causes earthquakes hundreds of kilometers below the surface. This area of Argentina is therefore considered sensitive to seismic activity.

Moderate Earthquake in Turkey, No Casualties

As part of a series of seismic events, a moderate earthquake was also felt in Istanbul and the northwestern parts of Turkey. The earthquake, which occurred at 2:55 PM local time (5:25 PM Indian Standard Time), was centered in the Sea of Marmara near Tekirdağ province.

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) reported that the initial magnitude of the earthquake was measured at 5.0 on the Richter scale. The earthquake's epicenter was at a depth of approximately 6.71 kilometers below the surface. During this earthquake, people panicked and evacuated buildings, and schools were cleared. However, according to preliminary reports, no damage or casualties have been reported. The Istanbul Governor's Office also confirmed that no serious damage occurred due to the earthquake.

5.5 Magnitude Earthquake in West Papua, Indonesia

The land in Indonesia's West Papua region was also shaken by seismic activity. According to the USGS, the earthquake's magnitude was measured at 5.5 on the Richter scale. It was located near the southern coast and centered at a depth of approximately 20 kilometers.

Seismic activity is common in this region as it is located on the active tectonic zone of the Indo-Australian Plate, known as the Ring of Fire. Experts explain that earthquake events are normal in this area due to the constant movement of plates. No loss of life or property was reported from this earthquake either.
