Mumbai Indians' Retention and Trade Strategy

Mumbai Indians have completed two major trades ahead of the 2026 IPL retention.

  • First major trade: On Thursday, November 13, Mumbai Indians acquired bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants for ₹2 crore.
  • Second major trade: Following this, explosive batting all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford from Gujarat Titans was added to Mumbai Indians for ₹2.6 crore.

These two trades have enhanced the team's strength and balance, particularly in terms of middle-order batting and all-round capabilities.

Sherfane Rutherford's Return to Mumbai

Sherfane Rutherford has previously played for Mumbai Indians in 2020. That season, Mumbai Indians won the title under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. Rutherford's explosive batting, ability to score quickly, and contributions with the ball make him an extremely valuable player for the team. This West Indies left-handed batsman has consistently shown the ability to change the outcome of a match. His style of hitting big sixes in the middle order and altering the game's direction provides balance to the team.

In 2025, Rutherford was part of Gujarat Titans. He scored a total of 291 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 157.30. His batting strength lies in hitting excellent shots in the middle order and guiding the team to high scores. Furthermore, Rutherford is also capable with the ball. He is a right-arm medium-pacer and has the ability to take wickets at crucial moments of a match. This all-round versatility provides balance to the team and increases strategic options.

Rutherford's international experience will also be beneficial for Mumbai Indians. He has played over 200 T20 matches and scored more than 3,500 runs. He possesses experience of playing in major tournaments and has thrilled scoreboards worldwide with his explosive shots. This ability will not only strengthen Mumbai Indians' middle order but also assist the team in match-winning situations.
