Mumbai Weather: The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai and several other districts of the state, including Thane, due to continuous heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall since the morning of Tuesday, August 18, 2025, has led to waterlogging and traffic jams in the city. Considering the safety of students, the BMC has announced a holiday for the afternoon sessions in all schools and colleges. Officials have alerted emergency services and advised citizens to avoid stepping out of their homes unnecessarily.
Red Alert Issued in Mumbai
The Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Mumbai and several other districts of the state, including Thane, on Tuesday (August 18, 2025). Continuous heavy rainfall has exacerbated the problem of waterlogging in the city. Along with the red alert in Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune, Kolhapur, and Satara districts, an orange alert has been implemented in Sindhudurg.
In view of this serious situation, the BMC has announced a holiday for the afternoon session in all schools and colleges in Mumbai. The Municipal Commissioner has instructed emergency services to remain alert and appealed to citizens to leave their homes only when necessary.
Impact on Traffic and Local Train Services
Due to heavy rains, Mumbai's local train services are experiencing delays. Several areas, including Kurla, Sion, Kings Circle, Hindmata, Andheri, Parel, and LBS Road, are waterlogged, causing traffic jams on the roads. There are currently no changes to BEST bus services.
Mumbai Police has appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and plan their journeys carefully. This situation is a particular cause for concern for the general public and office-going employees in the city.
High Tide and Disaster Management Preparedness
The danger of high tide also remains along the coast. According to the Meteorological Department, a high tide of approximately 3.18 meters is expected around the evening, so it is advised to avoid going to the sea shore. State Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan has also directed a review of the rain and flood situation.
On August 16, a record 244.7 mm of rainfall was recorded in the Mumbai suburbs, which was the third highest single-day rainfall in the month of August in the last 13 years. This data makes it clear that the Meteorological Department's warning is serious and it is necessary to be vigilant.
