PM Modi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved another historic milestone. He is now the second-longest serving Prime Minister of the country. With this achievement, he has surpassed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, setting a new record. While Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, held the office for the longest continuous period, Narendra Modi has now secured the second position in this historical list.

Modi Second After Nehru

Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 4078 days in office on July 25, 2025. Previously, this record was held by Indira Gandhi, who served as Prime Minister for a total of 4077 days. Modi's journey began on May 26, 2014, when he first became the Prime Minister of the country. Indira Gandhi held the reins of the country for two terms—the first from 1966 to 1977 and the second from 1980 to 1984. However, Narendra Modi has completed two consecutive terms and has now entered his third term, surpassing Indira Gandhi in terms of continuous service.

Pandit Nehru Still at the Top

However, the record for the longest continuous tenure as Prime Minister still belongs to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He held command of the country from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964, for approximately 16 years and 286 days. After him, Modi has become the first Prime Minister to achieve this honor by continuously serving as Prime Minister for approximately 11 years and 2 months.

Historic Journey from Chief Minister to Prime Minister

Before becoming Prime Minister, Narendra Modi served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from October 2001 to May 2014. That was also a record, as Modi is the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat. Thus, Modi has played a long innings in leadership from the state to the national level. His working style, plans, and electoral strategies have secured him victories in three consecutive general elections—in 2014, 2019, and 2024, his government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, was formed with a full majority.

First Prime Minister Born After Independence with the Longest Tenure

Modi is also special in that he is the first Prime Minister born in independent India to hold office for such a long period. He was born on September 17, 1950. It is also a historical aspect that despite being born after independence, he has left such a deep impact on the politics of independent India.

Non-Congress and Prime Minister Connected to South India

Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister who is from a non-Congress party and yet has come to power three times in a row. He also comes from Gujarat—that is, a non-Hindi speaking state—from where no Prime Minister had led the country for such a long time. Until now, most of the Prime Ministers of the country have been from the Hindi belt.

Modi's Image on the Global Stage

Narendra Modi's tenure has not only been limited to the length of time, but he has also provided b leadership to India on the global stage. Whether it is the presidency of the G20, the Chandrayaan mission, Digital India, or the COVID crisis—under Modi's leadership, India has faced every challenge and made its presence felt.
