Nepal Bans 26 Social Media Platforms, Including Facebook and X, Following Supreme Court Order

Nepal has taken a significant digital step by banning 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and X. Following a Supreme Court order, the government has issued directives to shut down apps that are not registered. Only a few platforms have been granted exemptions.

Digital Strike: Neighboring country Nepal has imposed a ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and X, after the September 3 deadline passed. This action was taken subsequent to a Supreme Court order that mandated all domestic and foreign companies to register in the country. The government has stated that platforms complying with the regulations may have the ban lifted.

Nepal Takes Strict Action

In a major digital strike, neighboring country Nepal has banned Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, X, and 26 other social media platforms. The Nepali government has officially issued an order stating that all unregistered platforms will no longer be able to operate in the country. This step has been taken in compliance with Supreme Court directives.

On August 28, Nepal's Supreme Court instructed social media companies to register to operate within the country. The court issued this order to monitor unwanted and sensitive content on social media and ensure adherence to the law.

Why Were Social Media Platforms Banned?

Nepal's Ministry of Communications and Technology, supporting the decision of the Telecom Authority, stated that many social media platforms failed to register by the deadline. Ministry spokesperson Gajendra Thakur informed that the government had expected companies to come forward by September 3. This strict measure was implemented after the deadline expired.

Among global platforms, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X, Reddit, and LinkedIn did not complete the registration process. Meanwhile, TikTok, Nibuzz, Viber, Witk, and Popo Live are already listed. Telegram and Global Diary have applied for registration but have not yet received approval.

What the Government and Reports Say

According to a report by The Kathmandu Post, all social media apps in Nepal have been banned except for these 5 listed platforms and the 2 that have applied. Government spokesperson Gajendra Kumar Thakur clarified that if any platform applies for registration, the ban imposed on it will be lifted on the same day.

This digital strike in Nepal is likely to have a significant impact on social media users and businesses. Social media companies are now mandated to register in accordance with Nepal's regulations.
