Mamdani stated that he is willing to meet if such a gathering could provide relief from the city's inflation and rising cost of living. During a visit to a food pantry in the Bronx, he revealed that his team had contacted the White House to arrange a meeting. Trump, too, commented on the potential meeting while returning to Washington from Florida, saying, “We will definitely do something.”
Mamdani's Objections to Federal Decisions
Mamdani stated that he is ready to meet anyone if it benefits the people of New York. He recalled that Trump had promised to lower grocery prices and reduce the cost of living during his election campaign, but the current administrative decisions are having an adverse effect on New Yorkers.
He criticized attempts to reduce funding for the SNAP food assistance program during the government shutdown and stated that his administration would protect the city from any federal measures that create difficulties for its residents.
Potential Meeting Amidst Political Clashes
The potential meeting between Mamdani and Trump is being viewed as a sign of political shift. During the election campaign, Trump had repeatedly targeted Mamdani, calling him a “communist” and warning that New York would be ruined if he won.
Trump had also threatened deportation and cutting off funding. Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, became an American citizen in 2018 and recently defeated Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, subsequently beating both Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa by a significant margin in the mayoral election.
