Nimisha Priya: Regarding the case of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya being sentenced to death in Yemen, the Indian government has clarified its position. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the government is taking this matter very seriously and is providing all possible assistance to Nimisha Priya. Currently, the Yemeni court has stayed her death sentence, which has provided some relief to her family and supporters.
'Blood Money' is the Only Remaining Option
Under Islamic law, the only remaining option to save Nimisha Priya is "blood money." Under this law, a certain amount of money can be given to the deceased's family, in exchange for which they can pardon the accused. This process is legally valid in Yemen and has been used in many such cases.
Government Arranged Legal Assistance
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the Indian government has ensured legal assistance for Nimisha Priya. A qualified lawyer has been appointed for her, who is presenting her case in accordance with Yemeni local law. In addition, the ministry is constantly informing her family about the legal process and is also in regular contact with the local administration.
India in Contact with Some Friendly Countries
Randhir Jaiswal also stated that the Indian government is in contact with some friendly countries that can influence Yemen. Efforts are being made through these countries to resolve the matter with sensitivity and on humanitarian grounds. Although the names of these countries have not been made public, this effort demonstrates the government's seriousness.
Case Pending in Supreme Court in India as Well
A petition was also filed in the Supreme Court of India regarding this matter. In court, the central government clarified that since this matter is related to the judicial process of another country, the government's role is limited. Despite this, the government remains continuously active at the diplomatic and legal levels.
Active Role of the Indian Embassy
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has informed that the Indian Embassy in Yemen is in constant contact with local authorities. With the help of the embassy, Nimisha Priya's family has been given detailed information about the laws and justice system of Yemen. In addition, the embassy has played a role in facilitating communication between Nimisha Priya's family and the deceased's family. This dialogue could be important in the direction of reaching a mutual agreement through "blood money."
