Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has discussed the basic math skills of children and young people amid the increasing use of AI. During a conversation on the Ezra Klein Show, he said that traditional practices such as memorizing multiplication tables may become less important in the AI era.
Using long division and square roots as examples, Huang said such calculations may be less necessary for children today than they were in the past. His argument is that when AI can handle routine and minor tasks, people can direct their mental energy toward more complex problems.
Huang Says He Does Not Remember His Own Phone Number
During the conversation, Jensen Huang also shared a personal example regarding his memory. He said he does not remember his own home address or phone number.
He recalled an incident in which he was asked for his card's ZIP code while paying for gasoline. At the time, he could not remember the code and became nervous.
According to Huang, he does not want to spend his mental capacity remembering such information and is now comfortable with the situation.
Huang Discusses Losing Some Skills as a Cost of AI
Huang said that technological development has, over time, reduced people's dependence on some basic capabilities. According to him, AI could similarly take over routine tasks and give people an opportunity to focus on more complex problems.
He believes that in the future, greater emphasis may be placed on skills such as better systems thinking and understanding complex problems instead of some basic capabilities.
However, experts have expressed differing views on this perspective. Some experts say that b basic math and foundational understanding provide the basis for more advanced thinking and problem-solving. The role and balance of these foundational capabilities alongside AI use therefore remain subjects of debate.
