Large-Scale Mock Drill 'Operation Shield' Planned for May 31st in Border States

A large-scale mock drill, codenamed 'Operation Shield', will be conducted on May 31st in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Sirens will sound, blackouts will be implemented, and citizens are advised to remain vigilant during the security checks.

Operation Shield: The government has announced a large-scale mock drill in the border states of the country on May 31st. Named 'Operation Shield', it will specifically focus on areas bordering Pakistan. The objective is to strengthen security arrangements and test the capacity for swift response in emergency situations. Understanding the participating teams, procedures, and individual roles is crucial.

Where will the mock drill take place?

'Operation Shield' will be conducted in five major states: Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Haryana, and Rajasthan. These states share borders with Pakistan and are considered high-risk areas for potential attacks. The drill aims to assess the robustness of security measures in these border regions.

Why is the mock drill being conducted?

This drill aims to test the preparedness and response capabilities of security agencies in various emergency situations, such as enemy drone attacks, missile strikes, or terrorist attacks. Following shortcomings identified in the first drill on May 7th, this second exercise seeks to address these deficiencies. The government states this exercise is vital for improving national security and preparing citizens for potential threats.

Who will participate in the mock drill?

The drill will involve Civil Defence Wardens, police, fire brigades, medical personnel, and disaster management teams. Furthermore, youth organizations like the NCC (National Cadet Corps), NSS (National Service Scheme), NYKS (Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan), and Bharat Scouts and Guides will actively participate. Teams will collaboratively execute plans to defend against simulated attacks.

What will happen during the mock drill?

Several key activities are planned. Firstly, air raid sirens will sound to signal an impending threat. This will be followed by a temporary blackout to simulate a real-life scenario. Emergency communication systems will be tested to ensure smooth information flow during crises. Simulated drone or aircraft attacks and a practice evacuation of 20 individuals will be conducted. A blood donation drive will also be organized to manage potential medical emergencies.

Why was the mock drill date changed?

Initially scheduled for May 29th, the drill was postponed to May 31st due to administrative reasons. Following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22nd, resulting in 26 deaths, the government decided to further strengthen security preparations, leading to this mock drill.
