President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Amritsar on Thursday as part of her Punjab visit to attend the 50th Golden Jubilee Convocation of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU). During the ceremony, the President will confer degrees and medals on students, with a total of 463 students scheduled to be honoured.
Ahead of the President’s arrival, extensive security arrangements were put in place by the police and civil administration. The GNDU management, district administration and state police jointly completed security rehearsals and finalised preparations for the event.
Security measures in Amritsar were maintained at the highest level. All individuals entering the convention hall and the university परिसर were subjected to frisking and identity verification. An ADGP-level team, chaired by S.S. Parmar, conducted a detailed review of security standards, route planning and rehearsals at the convention venue.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Karamjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner Dalwinderjit Singh, Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, AIG Parminder Singh Bhandal and other senior officials are overseeing the security arrangements. Passes and identity documents have been issued to students and members of the public. Admission documents and tag numbers for students receiving degrees and medals have also been finalised. The entire campus and surrounding areas have been sealed with barricading to ensure security.
At the convocation, degrees and medals will be awarded to 463 students, including 74 undergraduate students, 102 postgraduate students, 270 PhD degree recipients and seven memorial medal awardees. In addition, the university will confer honorary doctorates on two eminent personalities.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Governor Gulabchand Kataria will also attend the programme as chief guests. The Chief Minister is scheduled to visit Harmandir Sahib and Akal Takht on Thursday, for which strict security arrangements have also been put in place.
