The opposition targeted the government over the alleged deployment of CISF in the Rajya Sabha. Kharge questioned the dignity of Parliament. JP Nadda retorted, calling the opposition's behavior undemocratic.
Rajyasbha: The Rajya Sabha witnessed an uproar on Tuesday when Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that the government had deployed CISF personnel near the well of the House. Terming this move highly objectionable, Kharge said that it was against democratic traditions and the dignity of Parliament. He questioned whether Parliament had fallen so low that security forces were being used to suppress the right of members to protest.
Kharge cited former leaders
Kharge said that when Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj were in the opposition, they had also described disruption of parliamentary proceedings as a part of democracy. He emphasized that it is the constitutional right of every member to protest, and the opposition is exercising that right.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh refuted Kharge's allegations
Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh rejected Kharge's allegations, clarifying that no external force like the CISF had been deployed in the House. He stated that the security arrangement is part of Parliament's internal system, and the personnel deployed that day were part of Parliament's security system.
JP Nadda lashed out at the opposition
Responding to the opposition's allegations, Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha and BJP President JP Nadda said that the opposition's behavior is undemocratic and chaotic. He said that when a member is speaking in the House and an opposition member disrupts his speech with slogans, it is not a democratic process.
"Take tuition from me...": Nadda's taunt
Nadda sarcastically said to Kharge, "I myself have been in the opposition for a long time. You should learn from me how to work in the opposition because you will remain in the opposition for the next 40 years. Take tuition from me." His statement became a topic of much discussion in the House.
Democratic propriety versus the right to protest
This entire debate has once again raised the question of what the limits of protest and dissent are in a democracy. Does demonstrating within Parliament empower democracy, or does it undermine its dignity?
Opposition's stance and government's accountability
The opposition has made it clear that they will not sit quietly on issues of public interest and will continue to oppose the government's policies. On the other hand, the government says that disrupting the proceedings of the House is not only an injustice to the people but also against the spirit of the parliamentary system.
Importance of rules and procedures
It is the responsibility of every member to conduct proceedings within Parliament according to the rules. The Deputy Chairman clarified that only authorized security personnel were present in Parliament and no external force was present. In such a situation, the allegations made by the opposition were described as misleading.
