Russia has launched a major air attack on Ukraine's gas production unit, Naftogaz, destroying the facility with missile and drone strikes. This attack, occurring just before the winter season, has dealt a severe blow to Ukraine and is likely to significantly impact the country's gas supply.
Kyiv: The Russia-Ukraine war is continuously becoming more dangerous. On the night between Thursday and Friday, Russia launched 35 missiles and 60 drones at Ukraine simultaneously, with Ukraine's main gas production plant, Naftogaz, being the biggest target. The plant suffered severe damage in this attack, leading to disruptions in electricity and gas supply to thousands of homes.
This attack occurred at a time when Ukraine was attempting to bolster its energy storage and supply ahead of the winter season. Experts believe that this assault will deeply impact civilian life and could further deepen the energy crisis.
Ukraine's Largest Gas Production Plant Targeted
Naftogaz, located in Ukraine's Kharkiv-Poltava region, is the country's largest fuel gas production unit. Following Russia's missile and drone attack, the plant has become almost inoperative. Sergiy Koretskyi, CEO of Naftogaz, issued a statement saying, "This gas was not used by the military. Its production and supply were intended for civilian and industrial needs. Despite this, the plant was attacked."
Following this attack, gas and electricity supplies were suddenly disrupted in several Ukrainian cities. Reports indicate that thousands of homes have been immediately affected.
Major Blow to Ukraine Before Winter
Ukraine is already grappling with an energy crisis due to ongoing Russian attacks. In this context, an assault on the country's largest gas production unit just before the onset of winter could further exacerbate the situation. Experts state that if gas production remains disrupted for an extended period, Ukraine may be forced to import large quantities of gas, which could place a substantial burden on the nation's economy.
The Ukrainian government has taken emergency measures, deciding to purchase gas from other European countries and intensify its focus on alternative energy sources. Russia asserts that the objective of its attacks is to weaken Ukraine's military and energy infrastructure, thereby reducing its war capabilities. However, analysts believe that targeting civilian energy supply is part of Russia's "pressure tactic," aimed at exerting a psychological impact on the Ukrainian populace and government.
