According to the Hindu calendar, Sawan or Shravan month is an extremely sacred month dedicated to Lord Shiva. This month is especially significant for Shiva devotees because offering water to the Shivling, observing fasts, and chanting mantras during this period bring happiness, peace, wealth, and mental tranquility into one's life.

Mondays hold special importance during this month. Devotees observe fasts on Sawan Mondays and perform special worship of Lord Shiva. Many people also begin the 16 Monday fast during this time, which continues for 16 consecutive weeks.

Beginning and End of Sawan 2025

According to the Panchang, Sawan 2025 begins on July 11, 2025 (Friday) and ends on August 9, 2025 (Saturday), the day of Raksha Bandhan.

However, the starting dates of Sawan may vary slightly in different parts of India.

  • North India (Rajasthan, UP, MP, Punjab, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh) – Sawan will begin on July 11th.
  • South and West India (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Goa) – Sawan will begin on July 25th.
  • In some regions of Uttarakhand and Himachal, Sawan will begin on July 16th.

Auspicious Yogas and Planetary Transits in Sawan

  • Mercury and Saturn will be in retrograde motion.
  • Auspicious combinations like Shiva Yoga, Preeti Yoga, and Ayushman Yoga will form during this month.
  • These yogas are considered very favorable for devotion and worship. Performing worship during such yogas is highly fruitful.

Sawan Monday Fast and Worship Rituals

There is a special method for observing fasts and performing Shiva worship during Sawan, which, if followed, brings the grace of Shiva.

Main Worship Ritual:

  • Wake up during Brahma Muhurta in the morning and take a bath.
  • Wear clean clothes and go to the temple or worship the Shivling at home.
  • Offer water or milk to the Shivling.
  • Offer Bel leaves, Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges), white sandalwood, Datura flowers, and honey.
  • Chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' or the 'Mahamrityunjaya Mantra' at least 108 times.
  • Fasting individuals should consume fruits throughout the day and listen to the story and perform Aarti in the evening.

By observing a fast on Mondays and worshipping Lord Shiva with devotion, obstacles in marriage, financial difficulties, and mental problems are removed.

Beginning of the 16 Monday Fast from Sawan

The tradition of observing the sixteen Monday fast begins from the first Monday of the Sawan month. This is especially done by unmarried girls to get a suitable life partner. Married women also observe this fast for the happiness and peace of their families.

This fast is observed continuously for 16 Mondays. On every Monday, water is offered to the Shivling, worship is performed, and a special story is recited.

Time and Significance of Jalabhishek (Offering Water)

Offering water to Lord Shiva in Sawan has special significance. According to the Panchang, the auspicious time for Jalabhishek on the first day of Sawan, July 11th, will be from 5:33 AM to afternoon.

Gangajal, milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugarcane juice can also be used in Jalabhishek. This anointment removes negative energy and brings peace to the mind.

Do's and Don'ts in Sawan

Do's:

  • Chant Shiva mantras daily.
  • Observe the Monday fast.
  • Eat a moderate diet and practice celibacy.
  • Donate, especially food and water.

Don'ts:

  • Do not consume meat and alcohol.
  • Refrain from anger, harsh words, and violence.
  • Avoid lying and hurting anyone's feelings.
