West Bengal’s Birbhum district reported a fire at a hotel near Tarapith early Monday morning, killing seven devotees and injuring several others. The fire broke out at around 4:30 am while most of the devotees staying at the hotel were asleep.
The fire started at around 4:30 am on Monday. Smoke quickly spread through the hotel rooms and corridors, making it difficult for people inside to escape. Local authorities were informed after the fire broke out.
The hotel was accommodating devotees who had arrived for darshan at the Tarapith temple. Several people were trapped inside as the fire spread through a large part of the hotel.
Fire brigade teams reached the site after receiving information about the incident and began rescue operations. Firefighters attempted to evacuate people trapped inside the hotel, while several people were brought out safely.
People affected by the fire and smoke were taken to hospitals for treatment. The rescue operation was challenging because the hotel had filled with smoke. Administrative teams also checked the building to ensure that no one remained trapped inside.
Initial information indicated that a short circuit in an air conditioner may have caused the fire. The actual cause of the fire will be established after a detailed investigation. Police and the concerned departments are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The fire is also expected to have damaged rooms and property inside the hotel. The administration is examining whether adequate fire safety arrangements were in place and whether the necessary safety measures had been implemented to deal with an emergency.
The incident occurred on Sawan Monday, when a large number of devotees had arrived at Tarapith temple for darshan. Devotees visiting Tarapith during Sawan stay at hotels and dharamshalas located around the temple.

Those affected by the incident were reportedly staying at the hotel after arriving for darshan at Tarapith temple. The fire broke out suddenly in the early morning while they were staying there.
Seven people died in the incident. The deaths have led to mourning among the families of the victims. The administration has accelerated relief and rescue operations following the incident.
The process of identifying the deceased and informing their families is also being carried out at the administrative level. A crowd gathered around the hotel following the fire, while police managed security arrangements and kept people away from the site to avoid obstruction to the rescue operation.
Several people affected by the fire or smoke were taken to hospitals. Some of the injured were reported to be in serious condition and were receiving treatment under medical supervision.
Further details on the number and condition of the injured are expected to emerge from the administration.
Police and the administration have started investigating the incident. The investigation includes the cause of the fire and the hotel’s safety arrangements, along with possible lapses. Further action will be determined on the basis of the officials’ report.
The immediate priority is to provide medical treatment to the injured and necessary assistance to those affected by the incident. The administration is also working to inform the families of the deceased and address other aspects related to the incident.
The incident has raised questions about fire safety arrangements at hotels in crowded tourism and religious destinations. Hotels and other accommodation facilities used by large numbers of devotees require fire extinguishers, emergency exits, fire alarms and safe electrical systems.
The incident has also highlighted the importance of regular fire safety checks at hotels, dharamshalas and other accommodation facilities at religious tourism destinations, particularly during festivals and special religious occasions.
A detailed investigation is expected to provide more information about the actual cause of the fire, any deficiencies in the safety arrangements and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
