A case of alleged fraud involving more than Rs 7 lakh under the pretext of marriage has been reported in Sultanpur. The accused allegedly introduced himself as an auditor in the Income Tax Department, secured a marriage proposal, and later gained the family’s trust before taking money from them.
According to the victim’s family, the man claimed to hold a government job and a senior post, presenting himself as an influential person. Trusting these claims, the family began preparing for the marriage and continued giving him money on different pretexts.
The accused allegedly sought money citing job-related requirements, family problems, and marriage preparations. Over time, he reportedly collected more than Rs 7 lakh from the family.
The matter came under suspicion when the victim’s family decided to verify the man’s credentials in Sultanpur. During the inquiry, it was revealed that he was not an auditor in the Income Tax Department.
The family later demanded the return of the money, but the accused allegedly began avoiding them and gradually reduced communication.
The victim’s side subsequently filed a police complaint, following which an FIR was registered. Police said efforts are underway to trace the accused.
Cases of alleged fraud in the name of marriage have continued to surface in Uttar Pradesh, with accused persons often claiming fake jobs, high salaries, and government positions to gain trust.
Police officials said call records, bank transactions, and other documents linked to the accused are being examined. Authorities also said an arrest is expected soon.
Local residents said caution has become necessary in both online and traditional marriage arrangements. Families should conduct proper verification before finalising marriage proposals, they said.
The case has also drawn attention on social media, where users have called for faster police action and greater public awareness in such matters.
Sultanpur Police appealed to people to verify the identity and employment details of individuals before transferring large sums of money in the name of marriage or employment.
Experts said personal verification and legal caution have become necessary amid increasing cases of cyber and social fraud.
Police are continuing the investigation, while the victim’s family is awaiting justice.
