New Delhi: The Supreme Court has expressed deep concern regarding the rising hate speech on social media. The court stated that freedom of expression cannot be allowed to become a medium for hate speech. The court has instructed the central and state governments to take strict action in such cases, while also ensuring that freedom of speech is not suppressed.
Supreme Court Expresses Deep Concern
The Supreme Court made an important observation on Monday regarding the rapidly spreading hateful statements on social media and digital platforms. The court said that what is being said and disseminated in the name of freedom of expression nowadays is dangerous for both democracy and society.
This observation was made by a bench of Justices B. V. Nagarathna and Augustine George Masih during the hearing of a petition. The petition was filed against social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli by a person named Vajahat.
Control of Hate Speech Necessary
The court clearly stated that control of hate speech is necessary. Such rhetoric only serves to poison society, and it not only affects people's thinking but also endangers social harmony.
The bench said that freedom of speech is a fundamental right of every citizen, but this does not mean that it should be used to spread hatred.
'Not Censorship, But Restraint is Necessary'
The Supreme Court rejected the demand for censorship, saying that this path is not correct. The court said that any such system could threaten freedom of speech. Instead, every citizen should practice self-restraint and understand that responsibility is also associated with freedom of expression.
The court said, "People must understand that freedom of speech is a precious right and should not be taken lightly." The court also said that it is not only the government's responsibility but also that of ordinary citizens to not promote content that spreads hatred.
The Role of the State Should be Limited
The court also said that if the state has to interfere repeatedly, this situation is not right. This can indirectly threaten freedom of expression. Therefore, it is necessary that people become aware themselves and neither share nor support any objectionable content.
Instructions to the Center and States
The court has given clear instructions to the central government and state governments in this entire matter to take strict action in cases of hate speech. The police and other agencies will have to be vigilant in monitoring such activities and taking timely action.
