Supreme Court to Hear Sonam Wangchuk's NSA Detention Case Today

A hearing will take place today in the Supreme Court regarding Sonam Wangchuk's detention. His wife has called the NSA unlawful, while the Centre and the administration are justifying the detention. The court's decision will determine whether he is released or his detention is extended.

Rajasthan: A crucial hearing is scheduled today in the Supreme Court concerning the detention of Sonam Wangchuk, the renowned climate activist and education reformer from Ladakh. Wangchuk is currently held in Jodhpur Central Jail in Rajasthan. His arrest and the imposition of the National Security Act (NSA) on him have sparked widespread discussion and debate across the country.

During today's hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta will present the central government's arguments in court. If the Supreme Court is not satisfied with his submissions, orders for Sonam Wangchuk's release may also be issued. Conversely, if the administration's arguments are deemed b, his difficulties could further escalate.

Wife Raises Serious Questions in Petition

Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, has filed a 'Habeas Corpus' petition in the Supreme Court. The petition asserts that Wangchuk's arrest is illegal and violates his fundamental rights.

His wife alleges that the NSA was imposed hastily and without any solid basis. She claims that rules and legal provisions were not followed throughout the detention process. The petition further states that Wangchuk was peacefully expressing his views, and his activities posed no threat to national security whatsoever.

What Happened in the Previous Hearing

The previous hearing in this case took place on Wednesday before a bench of Justices Arvind Kumar and P.B. Varale. During that time, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the petitioner, sought permission from the court to show a video.

However, due to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta's unavailability, the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing of the case to Thursday, which is today. For this reason, today's hearing is considered extremely crucial.

Administration's Stance and the Entire Dispute

On the other hand, the Ladakh administration has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, justifying Sonam Wangchuk's detention. The administration states that Wangchuk was attempting to incite unrest in Leh. His activities could have posed a threat to public order and essential services. According to the administration, the District Magistrate of Leh signed his detention order on September 26 with full satisfaction.

The actual dispute began when Sonam Wangchuk was leading a 'Delhi Chalo' march, demanding special status for Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule and environmental protection. He was detained during this march and subsequently sent to Jodhpur Jail under the NSA. Now, all eyes are on the Supreme Court's decision, which will determine whether Sonam Wangchuk will regain his freedom or if his legal battle will continue for longer.
