Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Suresh Kalmadi passed away today at the age of 81. A statement released by Kalmadi’s office stated that the former Chairman of the Indian Olympic Association was undergoing treatment at the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune.
Suresh Kalmadi Passed Away: Senior Congress leader, former Member of Parliament, and a prominent figure in Indian sports administration, Suresh Kalmadi, passed away on Tuesday morning. He was 81 years old. He breathed his last at approximately 3:30 AM at the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune after a prolonged illness. His demise has cast a pall of grief over Indian politics and the sports world.
According to an official statement issued by the family and office, the mortal remains of Suresh Kalmadi were kept at his residence, Kalmadi House, located in Erandwane, Pune, until 2:00 PM on Tuesday for final tributes. Following this, the last rites were performed at the Vaikunth Crematorium in Navi Peth at 3:30 PM. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter-in-law, two daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren.
Political and Administrative Journey

Suresh Kalmadi’s public life was multifaceted. Before entering politics, he served as a pilot in the Indian Air Force from 1964 to 1972 and retired in 1974. He then ventured into social and political spheres.
He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Pune, Maharashtra, several times and also served as the Minister of State for Railways in the central government during 1995–96. He was known as an influential leader within the Congress party and held a special place in Pune’s politics.
Alongside politics, Suresh Kalmadi remained actively involved in Indian sports administration for a long time. He served as the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and represented India on international sports platforms. His role is considered significant in promoting sports infrastructure and India’s participation in international events.
Commonwealth Games and Controversy
However, Kalmadi’s name also surfaced in connection with allegations of corruption in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. As the head of the organizing committee, he faced accusations of alleged misuse of funds and irregularities related to the Games.
He was arrested in April 2011, following which the Congress party suspended him. This episode sparked a nationwide political controversy and a widespread debate regarding administrative reforms.
After years of legal proceedings, a Delhi court accepted the closure report of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in April 2025. The report closed the money laundering charges against Suresh Kalmadi, then Secretary General of the Organizing Committee Lalit Bhanot, and others. This formally brought the 13-year-old case to an end.
