Short Circuit Causes Minor Fire at Taj Mahal's Southern Gate; No Damage Reported

A short circuit caused a fire and smoke at the Southern Gate of the Taj Mahal. Teams from ASI and Torrent Power cut off electricity and brought the fire under control within two hours. No tourist or building was harmed.

Agra: Panic ensued after a sudden fire broke out at the Southern Gate of the world-famous Taj Mahal. Officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) stated that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the wiring. At the time of the incident, a cloud of smoke spread all around, alarming nearby people. However, no tourist or staff member was injured as entry for tourists through the Southern Gate has been closed since 2018 for safety reasons.

ASI staff immediately shut down the electricity supply and took prompt action to bring the fire under control. Officials stated that their vigilance and quick response prevented any major damage.

Torrent Power and ASI Controlled the Fire

ASI officials reported that upon receiving information about the fire, a Torrent Power team promptly arrived at the site. They repaired the wiring during an approximately two-hour shutdown and completely brought the fire under control. Power supply to the premises continued due to the UPS system, ensuring no disruption in other areas.

This swift response from Torrent Power and ASI demonstrates the continuous efforts being made to maintain vigilance in the security and operational management of the Taj Mahal.

Fire Caused by Short Circuit in Wiring

ASI confirmed that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the old wiring located on the roof. Officials stated that the fire did not damage any historical artifacts or structures. They added that electrical systems within the complex are regularly inspected and maintained, but this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of periodically replacing old wiring and enhancing safety measures.

Experts emphasize that regular upgrading of wiring and electrical installations in such monuments is essential to prevent unforeseen incidents like fires.

ASI Reviewed Security and Electrical Systems

Immediately after the fire, ASI initiated a detailed review of the entire complex's security and electrical systems. Officials will ensure wiring upgrades, regular inspections, and strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.

ASI stated that this incident also reminded them that fire and safety-related risks always exist in historical monuments, hence the electrical system and emergency response system must be further strengthened.
