CHENNAI: Following the deaths of 22 children in Madhya Pradesh, the Tamil Nadu government has taken stringent action regarding Coldrif cough syrup. The license of Srisan Pharmaceutical, the company manufacturing the cough syrup, has been cancelled. Ranganathan, the company's owner, has been arrested and sent to 10-day police custody. Under this action, the Tamil Nadu Drugs Control Department has also ordered an investigation into all other drug manufacturing companies in the state to prevent any negligence and the production of harmful medicines.

Case of Deaths from Coldrif Cough Syrup

In Madhya Pradesh, 22 children died in recent days, all of whom had consumed Coldrif cough syrup. Following this incident, the health department immediately took strict action and formed an SIT (Special Investigation Team) to investigate the matter. Initial investigation results revealed that Coldrif cough syrup contained excessive amounts of Diethylene Glycol (DEG). DEG is a toxic chemical considered extremely harmful to children's health.

Ranganathan, the company's owner, was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh SIT on October 9. Subsequently, Tamil Nadu police formally took him into custody. The court has sent him to 10-day police custody. Concurrently, the state government has suspended two senior drug inspectors, whose alleged negligence had allowed the matter to escalate to a serious extent. According to the health department, disciplinary action will be taken against them.

Tamil Nadu Government's Strict Stance

The Tamil Nadu government has clarified that Srisan Pharmaceutical's plant has been completely shut down, and the company's license has been revoked. Additionally, other drug companies in the state will also be investigated. The health department stated that strict quality checks and monitoring will be mandatory when any company produces codeine-containing or other scheduled drugs. Now, the stock, production, and sale of all medicines will be under government supervision.
