TRAI has implemented a new system to curb SMS fraud. Now, a special code will be mandatory at the end of the sender ID for messages, allowing users to easily distinguish between genuine and fake SMS. This move will help protect people from cyber fraud and deception.
SMS Fraud: In view of the continuously increasing incidents of cyber fraud, the Indian Telecom Regulator TRAI has announced the implementation of a new system. Under this rule, the codes S, G, or P will now be mandatorily appended at the end of every SMS sender ID. This code will indicate whether the message is related to banking, government schemes, or promotional services. The objective is to ensure that users can easily differentiate between fake SMS and genuine messages and avoid fraud.
How People Will Benefit
Nowadays, fraudsters send fake SMS by posing as bank or company officials and defraud people. Several videos have also emerged on social media where criminals use the excuse of receiving money into an account by showing fake bank transaction messages and extort large sums of money.
In such cases, it becomes extremely difficult to distinguish between genuine and fake SMS. After the implementation of TRAI's new rules, users will be able to easily understand whether the message has actually come from a bank, government agency, or company, or if it is a ploy by a cybercriminal.
How to Identify Genuine Messages
Under the new rules, TRAI has made it mandatory to add special codes to the sender ID of SMS. If 'S' is written at the end of the ID, it will be a message related to banking, transactions, or telecom services. 'G' will signify government schemes or alerts, and 'P' will identify promotional messages.
Through this new system, users will be able to easily differentiate between genuine and fake messages. Conversely, if a sender ID does not have these codes appended, it will be an indication to be cautious. In such a situation, ignoring the message would be the wise course of action.
