Dhanteras 2025: Today, October 18, 2025, the festival of Dhanteras is being celebrated across the country with devotion and enthusiasm on the Trayodashi Tithi of the Kartik month. This year, its significance is further enhanced as it falls during the auspicious Budhaditya Yoga. It is believed that Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) carrying the pot of Amrita (nectar) on this day, which is why, along with his worship, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera are also revered. In the evening, buying gold, silver, utensils, brooms, or lamps during the auspicious muhurta is considered propitious. Goddess Lakshmi is believed to reside in clean and brightly lit homes, so people decorate their houses and light lamps to welcome the deities.
Dhanteras Puja Rituals
On Dhanteras, take a morning bath and wear clean clothes. Draw a rangoli at the main entrance and mark the footprints of Goddess Lakshmi inside the house. For the puja, spread a red cloth on a chowki (a small elevated platform) and place the idols or pictures of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera, and Lord Dhanvantari.
Begin the puja by invoking Lord Ganesha. Thereafter, offer flowers, unbroken rice (akshat), kumkum, and basil leaves (tulsi) to Lord Dhanvantari. Offer red flowers, lotus seeds (kamal gatte), sweets, and coins to Goddess Lakshmi.
Chant Dhanvantari Stotra, Shri Suktam, and Lakshmi Gayatri Mantra. After the puja, light diyas (lamps) and place them in all four corners of the house. In the evening, make a four-faced diya from dough, fill it with mustard oil, and place it outside the house, facing south. This lamp is lit in the name of Yamaraj.
Significance of Dhanteras
Dhanteras marks the beginning of the Diwali festival. The five-day festival of lights commences on this day. According to mythological beliefs, Lord Dhanvantari emerged with the pot of Amrita during the Samudra Manthan, which is why this day is also known as Dhanatrayodashi. Special worship of Goddess Lakshmi is also performed on this day. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi resides in clean and brightly lit homes, so people undertake special cleaning of their houses and light lamps to welcome the Goddess.
Significance of Shopping during Budhaditya Yoga
This year, an auspicious planetary alignment is forming on Dhanteras. The Budhaditya Yoga, created by the conjunction of the Sun and Mercury, will be particularly auspicious for shopping and investments. Buying gold, silver, copper, utensils, brooms, and vehicles on this day is considered propitious. Additionally, purchasing new utensils or items related to wealth is believed to usher in prosperity in the coming year.
Mythological Tale of Dhanteras
According to the tale, once Lord Vishnu expressed a desire to visit Earth. Goddess Lakshmi also requested to accompany him. Lord Vishnu set a condition that she must obey whatever he said. Goddess Lakshmi agreed.
As Lord Vishnu proceeded towards the south, he instructed the Goddess to stay put. However, Goddess Lakshmi did not stop and followed him. On the way, she saw a beautiful mustard field. Enchanted by the yellow mustard flowers and sugarcane juice, Goddess Lakshmi adorned herself there and drank the sugarcane juice.
When Lord Vishnu returned and witnessed this scene, he punished Goddess Lakshmi for disobeying his command. She was cursed to live in a farmer's house for twelve years.
For twelve years, Lakshmi resided in the farmer's house, which transformed his life. His home became filled with wealth, grains, and prosperity. When the twelve years were complete, Lord Vishnu came to take her back, but the farmer was unwilling to let Goddess Lakshmi go. Then the Goddess said that she would visit his home every year on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, provided he kept his house clean and worshipped with devotion by lighting lamps. This tradition has continued ever since.
