Donald Trump's ally Stephen Miller accused India of financing the Ukraine war by buying oil from Russia. Trump also imposed a 25% tariff on India and accused it of immigration fraud.
Trump Tariff: Stephen Miller, a senior advisor to US President Donald Trump, recently expressed his displeasure over India's purchase of oil from Russia. In an interview with 'Fox News Sunday,' Miller said that Trump is very clear that it is unacceptable for the US for India to indirectly finance the Ukraine war by buying cheap crude oil from Russia.
Miller said that the amount of oil India is buying from Russia is equivalent to that of China. He termed it a "shocking fact" and said that it is contrary to America's foreign policy and business interests.
India's Policy: Energy Security Paramount
India has previously clarified that it can buy oil from any country at a competitive price for its energy needs. Indian officials have also stated that the crude oil purchased from Russia is refined in India and exported to other countries, including Europe. This means it contributes to the global supply chain.
According to experts, India's strategy is entirely focused on its national interests and energy security. India is a developing country with a large population that depends on affordable energy. In such a situation, India cannot compromise on its interests despite global political pressure.
Trump's Trade Policy and Comments on India
President Trump has also expressed concern about the trade deficit with India. He said that India's tariffs are among the highest in the world and it is quite difficult to get American products into India.
Trump accused India of imposing heavy duties on American products while calling itself a close friend of the US. He claimed that India's immigration policy also involves fraud, which harms American workers.
Announcement of 25% Tariff and Penalties on India
Based on all these things, Trump has announced a 25 percent import duty on India. In addition, there has also been talk of additional penalties on India for buying military equipment and crude oil from Russia. Trump says this step is necessary to establish a trade balance with India.
Mention of Trump-Modi Relations
Stephen Miller also said that Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have always had b relations. But the US will have to seriously consider India's role regarding the Ukraine war. He said that the US now has to create a concrete strategy to end this war, in which India's role will also be taken into account.
Miller also alleged that the current US administration, i.e., the Democratic Party and former President Joe Biden, are promoting the complexities of this war, and if Trump comes back to power, he will adopt diplomatic, economic, and other measures to end this crisis.
