The Uttar Pradesh Assembly declared three MLAs expelled from the SP as unattached. Now, these MLAs can function independently, and the technical hurdle to becoming ministers has been removed.
UP Politics: The Uttar Pradesh Assembly Secretariat has taken an important decision regarding three MLAs, Rakesh Pratap Singh, Abhay Singh, and Manoj Pandey, who were expelled from the Samajwadi Party (SP). Now, all three have been declared as "Unattached" members in the House. The direct effect of this is that these MLAs will no longer be formally affiliated with any party and will participate in the proceedings independently.
Formal order issued by the Speaker
The letter issued by the Assembly Secretariat stated that this information was provided based on a letter sent by Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on July 5, 2025. This letter stated that all three MLAs had been expelled from the party and no longer held any position in the SP.
Following this, the Speaker of the Assembly declared them as unattached members in the Assembly from July 9, 2025. The letter, signed by Principal Secretary Pradeep Dubey of the Secretariat, was communicated to all concerned parties.
What it means to be declared an "Unattached" MLA
"Unattached" means that the MLA no longer represents any political party. Their status in the House is like that of an independent MLA. They do not have to follow the line of any party and can independently decide their position in the government or the opposition.
Why the path to a ministerial position has become easier now
From a political and constitutional perspective, if an MLA is elected from one party and later wants to join the government of another party during the same term, the Anti-Defection Law may apply to them. To avoid this, it is necessary for them to first be expelled from their original party and then be declared unattached by the Assembly.
Akhilesh Yadav's strategy
When journalists asked Samajwadi Party National President Akhilesh Yadav why he had expelled these three MLAs, he answered openly. Akhilesh said that whenever these MLAs contacted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), they were sent back with the message that they were still members of the SP.
Akhilesh said that he has now removed this technical hurdle. This statement not only reflects a practical approach but also indicates that he has now prepared these leaders for the new situation by removing them from the party.
