How does the UPSC Examination begin?
To become an IAS officer, candidates must first appear for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. This exam is conducted annually, and millions of candidates participate. The commission divides the entire selection process into three stages, which include Prelims, Mains, and Interview.
The Prelims is a screening test consisting of two papers. The General Studies paper determines the merit, while CSAT is only qualifying. Candidates who clear the Prelims are given the opportunity to appear for the Mains examination.
Why is the Mains Examination the Most Difficult?
The Mains examination is entirely written and is considered the most challenging part of the Civil Services Examination. It comprises a total of nine papers, of which seven papers are counted for merit. These papers include four General Studies papers, two optional papers, and one essay.
The Mains examination is for a total of 1750 marks. It tests the candidate's in-depth understanding, writing ability, and knowledge across various subjects. Candidates choose their optional subject based on their interest and preparation.
Personality and Thought are Assessed in the Interview
After the Mains examination, the final stage is the Interview, also known as the Personality Test. It is for 275 marks and assesses the candidate's personality, decision-making ability, self-confidence, and communication skills. Here, fewer subject-specific questions are asked; instead, questions based on understanding and behavior are more prevalent.
The final merit list is prepared by combining the marks from the Mains and Interview. Those with the highest ranks are allocated to the IAS service. This is why this examination is considered one of the most competitive in India.
Eligibility and Age Limit to Become an IAS Officer
UPSC has set the minimum age for the IAS examination at 21 years. The maximum age for the General category is 32 years. OBC candidates receive a relaxation up to 35 years, and SC/ST candidates up to 37 years. Physically challenged candidates are provided with additional age relaxation.
Regarding educational qualification, a graduation degree from any recognized university is mandatory. Students from all streams, be it Arts, Science, or Commerce, can appear for this examination.
Where do IAS Officers Undergo Training?
Selected IAS officers from UPSC undergo training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie. Here, officers receive intensive training related to administration, law, policy, and field work.
After completing their training, officers are posted to a district, where their administrative career begins. This is the stage where candidates truly take on the primary responsibility of public service.
