Uttarakhand Congress Leaders Seek High Command Meeting After BJP's Bihar Win, Fear 2027 Setback

Amidst pressure arising from the resounding victory of BJP and NDA in the Bihar Assembly elections, Congress leaders in the state have sought time to meet Party President Mallikarjun Kharge and top leader Rahul Gandhi.

New Delhi: The resounding victory of BJP and NDA in the Bihar Assembly elections 2025 has not only impacted Bihar's politics but its effects are clearly visible even in the Uttarakhand Congress unit. Following BJP's historic win, concerns have escalated within Uttarakhand Congress, leading several senior leaders to seek time to meet Party President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. The leaders' intention is to have a serious discussion on the strategy for the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections.

Bihar's Victory Becomes a Warning for Congress

BJP's victory in the Bihar elections has shaken the Congress leadership. Several Uttarakhand Congress leaders believe that if electoral preparations are not started and the organization strengthened now, the situation could become even more difficult for the party in 2027. It is being felt within the party that BJP's continuous electoral successes are posing a significant threat to Congress, especially when Congress has been struggling for a decisive victory in Uttarakhand for the past decade.

Recent organizational changes within Uttarakhand Congress have also stirred unrest within the party. Opposition has emerged in several places regarding the new list of District Presidents. The party high command has made these changes keeping the 2027 Assembly elections in mind, but many senior leaders believe that these reshuffles were done without adequate dialogue and ground assessment.

This dissatisfaction is becoming even more apparent after the Bihar results. Congress leaders now want the high command to intervene immediately and discuss the organization's shortcomings, electoral strategy, and upcoming challenges.

Over 12 Senior Leaders Want to Meet the High Command

Amidst these developments, approximately 12 senior leaders of Uttarakhand Congress have sought time to meet the party leadership. Dhirendra Pratap, Senior Vice President and spokesperson for the State Congress, has confirmed this. He informed that he had detailed discussions on this matter with Surendra Sharma, the state co-incharge for Congress. The message is that Uttarakhand leaders want to seriously consider the Bihar results and discuss future strategy to prevent a repetition of that situation in Uttarakhand. The leaders who have sought a meeting include:

  • Former MP Mahendra Singh Pal
  • Former MP Isam Singh
  • AICC Member and Former Minister Brahm Swaroop Brahmachari
  • MLA Tilak Raj Behar
  • MLA Madan Bisht
  • Former Minister Mantri Prasad Naithani
  • State Congress General Secretary and Former State Minister Maqbool Ahmed
  • Former Minorities Department President Haji Salim Khan
  • Former OBC Department President Ashish Saini
  • Spokesperson Suraj Negi
  • State Congress Secretary Haji Rao Munna

All these leaders are unanimous on one point: the party must immediately clarify its direction and strategy for the 2027 elections. Dhirendra Pratap mentioned that he also spoke with former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat on this issue. Rawat stated that strategic discussions with the high command are absolutely essential — “There is no harm in seeking advice.” He also contacted Karan Mahara, the outgoing State Congress President. However, Mahara declined to share details of their conversation.
