Weather Conditions Deteriorate in Uttarakhand as Cyclone Arnab Affects Char Dham Region
Weather conditions have changed in Uttarakhand under the influence of Cyclone Arnab, with rainfall in hilly areas and the possibility of snowfall at higher altitudes. Six districts have reported rainfall, a yellow alert has been issued for 10 districts, and helicopter services have been suspended due to adverse weather.
Authorities have increased vigilance over the safety of pilgrims in the Char Dham region, including areas around Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Falling temperatures, snowfall at higher altitudes and rainfall in lower areas could make routes slippery and create difficulties for pilgrims travelling on foot. Poor weather conditions may also reduce visibility on mountain roads, affecting vehicle movement and pilgrimage management.
The suspension of helicopter services could affect pilgrims who planned to reach Kedarnath and other shrines by helicopter. Operations in mountainous areas depend on weather conditions, wind speed and visibility. Flights must be suspended when conditions do not meet safety requirements.
Pilgrims have been advised to check the status of their flights with the relevant service providers and the administration. Travel plans should not be based on expectations of service resumption without official confirmation.
Rainfall in the hill districts could lead to landslides, falling debris and slippery roads. Prolonged rainfall may also cause water levels in streams and rivers to rise. Monitoring vulnerable areas and providing updates on road traffic conditions remain important for the administration.
Travellers should avoid going near rivers and streams, proceeding along closed routes or taking risks during adverse weather. Any official order restricting movement on a particular route must be followed.
The Meteorological Department's forecast for the Char Dham region had indicated the possibility of light rain and thunderstorms along several routes on the morning of October 29. Light snowfall was also forecast for some high-altitude routes leading towards Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.
Pilgrims have been advised to check the latest updates from the relevant district administration and the Meteorological Department before beginning their journeys. Weather conditions may vary across different areas, and conditions should not be assumed to be uniform throughout the state.
With a yellow alert in place, the administration's priorities include public safety and the continued operation of essential services. The Disaster Management Department, police, district administrations and officials responsible for pilgrimage management may need to make decisions according to changing weather conditions.
Pilgrims should carry warm clothing, essential medicines and sufficient water, and avoid unnecessary travel. The resumption of affected services will depend on improvements in weather conditions and permission from the relevant authorities. Travellers in the hill regions are advised to remain cautious and follow official instructions.
