How is the Vice President Elected?

Under Article 66 of the Constitution of India, the Vice President is elected through a special method. This involves the use of the Single Transferable Vote system under the proportional representation system. Members of both Houses of Parliament participate in the election.

Voting takes place through a Secret Ballot. Each voter has to rank the candidates based on their preference. If a candidate does not secure the required quota with the first preference votes, the votes are redistributed based on the preferences of other candidates. This process continues until a candidate crosses the quota.

How Many Members of Parliament Will Vote?

Only the current members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha vote in the electoral college. This time, 782 Members of Parliament will be eligible to vote in the Vice Presidential election. These include:

  • 233 elected members of Rajya Sabha (5 seats vacant)
  • 12 nominated members of Rajya Sabha
  • 543 elected members of Lok Sabha (1 seat vacant)

Since all electors are Members of Parliament, each vote has the same value – meaning each MP's vote will be considered as 1.

Focus on the Strategies of Political Parties

All major political parties have begun strategic discussions regarding this election. Since this election is indirect and only MPs vote, every party is trying to keep its MPs united. Both the government and the opposition have their eyes on this election because it is a high constitutional post, and a political message also goes out through it.

The BJP-led NDA will try its best to get its candidate elected, while the opposition alliance (INDIA) is also trying to garner support in favor of a joint candidate.
