WhatsApp is testing a new logout feature that would allow users to temporarily sign out of the messaging platform without deleting the app or losing chat history, according to reports.
The feature is expected to change how users manage access to the app, particularly for those seeking a temporary break from digital communication. Until now, WhatsApp has not offered a direct logout option. Users who wanted to stop using the platform temporarily had to uninstall the application or manually clear app data through device settings, a process that could involve complications related to chats, media files, and backups.
Reports indicate that the feature has been spotted in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.26.21.9. It is currently available to a limited group of beta testers and may be rolled out to more users gradually in the future.
The new logout option is expected to appear within the app’s “Account Settings” section. Users will reportedly receive a dedicated button that allows them to temporarily disconnect their account from the device. After confirmation, WhatsApp will sign the user out while keeping chats, settings, and media files stored on the device.
Under the new system, logging out will not remove the account from the phone. Instead, the user will only be signed out and will be able to log back in without restoring chat backups or completing a lengthy setup process. The feature is intended to allow users to step away from WhatsApp temporarily without risking data loss.
The logout option is also expected to support users seeking digital breaks for work, studies, or personal well-being. Continuous notifications, group messages, and calls are increasingly viewed by many users as a source of stress, and the feature may offer a simpler way to disconnect temporarily while preserving account data and settings.
WhatsApp has introduced multiple new features in recent months, including multi-account support within a single app, chat lock functionality, Face ID support, and fingerprint lock security options. Meta has also been expanding user controls related to data management and app usage, and the new logout feature is being viewed as part of that broader effort.
