The primary suspect in the Kolkata gang-rape case, Manojit Mishra, has a history of criminal activity. He has previously been accused of harassment, assault, theft, and attacking police officers. He was granted bail by the court.
Kolkata Gang Rape: A new revelation in the Kolkata Law College gang-rape case has brought to light the criminal background of the primary suspect, Manojit Mishra, raising serious questions. It has now been revealed that this is not the first time Mishra has come under the scrutiny of the law. Previously, he had been accused of assaulting a police officer, vandalism, and several other serious offenses.
Previous Arrests
Manojit Mishra was arrested in April 2025 by the Kasba Police Station on charges of vandalizing a police vehicle and assaulting a police officer. This incident occurred when he went to an ATM in the Kasba area of South Kolkata to withdraw money. The security guard there stopped him from entering the ATM room with a cigarette, leading to a dispute.
Attack on Guard and Call for Police Assistance
According to eyewitnesses, when the guard confronted him, Manojit attacked the guard and started using abusive language. The guard immediately called the police control room for assistance. Shortly thereafter, a police PCR van arrived at the scene, but the situation did not improve.
Vandalism of Police Vehicle, Assault on Officer
Upon seeing the police, Manojit became even more aggressive. He allegedly broke the windshield of the police vehicle and assaulted an assistant sub-inspector in charge of the patrolling van. Following this, the police took him into custody and brought him to the Kasba Police Station for legal action.
Chaos and Abuse at the Police Station
According to sources, Manojit Mishra did not calm down at the police station either. There, he abused the police officers and got into arguments with the officers on duty. As a result, serious charges were filed against him, including obstructing police from performing their duties and vandalism at the police station.
Bail Granted by the Court
On April 14, the accused was presented in Alipur Court. The police demanded that he be remanded in custody, but the court granted him bail. This was not the first time Mishra had been granted bail. He has been involved in several criminal cases before, but he has escaped punishment each time.
A Long List of Past Cases
This incident is part of a larger series of events where Manojit Mishra's name has surfaced in connection with several serious cases. In 2017, he was arrested for allegedly instigating violence in the Kalighat area. In 2019, he was accused of assaulting a woman in the Law College union room, where the recent gang-rape incident also occurred. The police filed a chargesheet in this case.
Cases Registered in 2022 and 2024
Manojit Mishra was accused of harassment in the Kasba area in 2022. In 2024, a case of assaulting a security guard on the college campus also came to light. Despite these incidents, the college administration never took concrete action to remove him from the institution.
Benefit of Political Patronage
It is said that Manojit Mishra was associated with the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), and due to this political affiliation, he received institutional protection. Because of this, despite the serious charges against him, he continued to roam freely on the college campus and avoided any action against him.
The brutality that occurred with the 24-year-old student on June 25, 2025, in the Law College campus was not just an isolated incident but the culmination of a long sequence in which Manojit used his political influence and criminal tendencies to continuously commit violence and harassment.
