Kolkata Rape Case: Police have so far arrested four people in connection with the gang rape of a female student at South Law College in Kolkata, including a former student leader of the college. The student alleges that she was raped in the guard room after she rejected a marriage proposal. The accused's father has said that if his son is found guilty, he should be punished. The matter has turned into a political controversy.
Allegation of Gang Rape: Student narrates ordeal
The first-year student of South Law College in Kolkata has alleged that on June 25, when she came to the college to fill out the exam form, she was stopped by Monojit Mishra and his associates in the college campus. She rejected Monojit's marriage proposal, after which she was attacked.
According to the student, she was forcibly taken to the guard room. There, her clothes were removed and she was raped. The student says that the security guard was present at the time of the incident but did not help.
Accused recorded video, then blackmailed
The victim said that the main accused, Monojit Mishra, recorded the entire act on his mobile phone. Later, she was blackmailed and threatened by showing the video. Medical examination revealed injury marks, scratches, and bite marks on the student's body, which confirms the allegations.
Who is the main accused, Monojit Mishra?
Monojit Mishra was the organizational secretary of the South Kolkata unit of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). He is also a former student leader of the college. On the day of the incident, he was present with his two associates, Jaib Ahmed (first year) and Pramit Mukherjee (second year). The three of them harassed the student in the guard room for hours.
Security guard arrested, becomes the fourth accused
The police arrested the fourth accused, security guard Pinaki Banerjee, on Saturday. The investigation revealed that Pinaki was present in the guard room but did not help the student. At the behest of the accused, he went outside and did not inform the college administration or the police about the matter.
Statement of the accused's father
The accused, Monojit's father, said in a conversation with the news agency ANI, "I am a citizen of India first, then a father. If my son is found guilty, he should be punished. We have full faith in the law and justice system."
TMC's reaction
State Minister of Women and Child Development, Shashi Panja, condemned the incident and said that the government is with the victim. She urged that the matter should not be politicized. The government understands the seriousness of the matter and is providing full cooperation in the process of action.
BJP's allegation
The opposition BJP has alleged that leaders of the Trinamool Congress's student wing are involved in this heinous act. West Bengal BJP president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said that the state's law and order has failed. Despite the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directly controlling the Home Department, students are unsafe in the state.
The BJP took out a protest rally in Kolkata against the incident. Sukanta Majumdar was taken into custody by the police. He also accused Mamata Banerjee of giving political protection to the accused.
