Positive news has emerged from Assam for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Two NDA candidates have been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha, further strengthening the party's position in the Upper House.
Guwahati: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has achieved a significant victory in the Rajya Sabha elections in Assam. Kanad Purkayastha of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and senior Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Birendra Prasad Baishya have been elected as Rajya Sabha members unopposed. This achievement comes as opposition parties did not field any candidates.
This political development highlights the NDA's influence and unity in the state, and demonstrates the BJP-led alliance's b dominance in Assam's current political landscape.
Unopposed Victory: Opposition Inaction Paves the Way
A senior official from the Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat informed that the last date for nominations was June 12 (Thursday). However, no opposition party fielded a candidate, resulting in the unopposed victory of the BJP and AGP candidates. This situation arises when no other party sees a realistic chance of winning.
Kanad Purkayastha is entering the Rajya Sabha for the first time, though politics runs in his blood. He is the son of senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Kabindra Purkayastha. A resident of Silchar, Kanad is currently the secretary of the Assam unit of the BJP and is considered a strategic and efficient leader at the organizational level. His presence in the Rajya Sabha will provide the BJP with a new voice representing young leadership.
The other elected candidate, Birendra Prasad Baishya, is a senior leader of the Assam Gana Parishad. This will be his third term in the Rajya Sabha. He has previously served as a Union Minister and Lok Sabha MP. Baishya is considered a veteran and balanced figure in Assam's politics. His presence in the Rajya Sabha will strengthen the voice of Northeast India for the NDA.
