After a brief illness, he passed away at his residence in Shivaji Park on Wednesday night. Born in Goa, Prabhakar Karekar was counted among the prestigious artists of Indian classical music. According to his family, his mortal remains will be kept at his Dadar residence today for final darshan. His passing has caused a wave of mourning in the music world.

Who was Pandit Prabhakar Karekar?

Pandit Prabhakar Karekar was particularly known for bhajans like "Bolwa Vitthal Pahava Vitthal" and "Vakratunda Mahakaya." He was an excellent singer and a dedicated teacher. Karekar also performed as a graded artist on All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan. He received intensive training in classical music from great gurus like Pandit Suresh Haldankar, Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, and Pandit C.R. Vyas.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expresses grief

Goa's Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed grief over the demise of renowned classical vocalist Pandit Prabhakar Karekar. Sharing a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, "Deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Hindustani classical and semi-classical vocalist Pandit Prabhakar Karekar. Born in Antruz Mahal, Goa, Karekar learned Hindustani classical music under the tutelage of Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki and showcased his art on various platforms across the globe."

CM Sawant further wrote that Pandit Karekar made a significant contribution to the preservation and propagation of classical music in Goa. His musical legacy will live on through his disciples and admirers. Expressing deep condolences to Karekar's family, followers, well-wishers, and students, the Chief Minister wrote, "May God grant peace to the departed soul. Om Shanti."
