West Bengal: Leader of the Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday. He alleged that Banerjee made "provocative statements" in her speech at Red Road after Eid-ul-Fitr prayers. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the BJP MLA questioned Banerjee's statements, claiming they sparked controversy.
Questioning Mamata's Statement
Adhikari sharply criticized Banerjee's statement, asking, "Which religion is dirty, Mamata Banerjee Sahiba?" He alleged that the Chief Minister used Urdu words, which were "incomprehensible," to appease the Muslim community. He also questioned whether Banerjee was referring to Sanātana Dharma.
Riots and Communal Statements
Adhikari stated that Banerjee repeatedly used the word "riot" and questioned whether it was a religious event or a political one. He also accused Banerjee's words of attempting to create animosity between communities, warning that such actions would backfire.
Amit Malviya's Response
BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya also bly reacted to Banerjee's statement. He wrote on X, "Is Sanātana Dharma 'dirty religion' for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee?" He alleged that anti-Hindu riots occurred under Banerjee's rule and that she is now insulting Hinduism. He further alleged that Banerjee has given Muslims a free hand to target Hindus.
CM Mamata's Statement
The BJP's criticism came after Mamata Banerjee, speaking after Eid prayers at Red Road, stated that she was prepared to sacrifice her life for all religions. She accused opposition parties of inciting communal violence and reiterated her respect for all religions.
