Police have arrested 13 individuals in connection with the violence that erupted during celebrations following the Indian cricket team's victory in Mahu, Madhya Pradesh. Four FIRs have been filed, identifying approximately 40 named accused.
Indore: Following the Indian cricket team's Champions Trophy final victory, incidents of stone-pelting and arson occurred in Mahu, near Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Police have arrested 13 people, while an FIR has been registered at the Mahu police station against 17 named individuals and others, following the unrest near Moti Mahal Talkies.
According to reports, a tense situation prevailed in the area late at night following the incident, but the administration and police managed to bring the situation under control.
How did the violence erupt?
Reports suggest that over 100 people, riding on approximately 50 motorcycles, were celebrating on Sunday night in Mahu. A dispute arose near the Jama Masjid over the bursting of firecrackers, escalating into a clash between two groups. This resulted in stone-pelting, followed by arson and vandalism.
What was the extent of the damage?
Twelve motorcycles, two auto-rickshaws, and one car were set ablaze. Two shops were vandalized and set on fire. Several vehicles were damaged in the stone-pelting. A climate of fear gripped the entire area following the incident. According to Mahu police station in-charge Rahul Sharma, the police are investigating CCTV footage and mobile videos. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the main culprits, including those who wore masks while pelting stones and throwing petrol bombs.
What action will be taken against the arrested accused?
Indore Collector Ashish Singh stated that strict action will be taken against those who instigated the violence. Some accused may face action under the NSA (National Security Act). Police have registered four FIRs, naming 40 accused. According to statements given to the police, those involved in the violence had pre-planned the incident.
According to a victim mentioned in an FIR, the rioters threatened, "We had planned this beforehand. If you celebrate loudly, we will teach you a lesson today. If you hold another procession in front of us, we will finish you off." Following the violence, the police and administration brought the situation under control. Peace was restored in the area by morning, and security forces' deployment was increased. A heavy police presence remains in Mahu to prevent further disturbances.
