Bangladesh Army Chief Warns of Sovereignty Threat Amidst Political Crisis
Last Updated: 2 day ago

Bangladesh's army chief, General Wakar-uz-Zaman, has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation and political instability in the country. He warned that if political parties fail to resolve their differences, the nation's sovereignty and independence could be seriously threatened.

General Zaman appealed to all political parties to work together to resolve their disputes and maintain peace and stability in the country. He clarified that the army's priority is currently restoring law and order, after which it intends to return to its barracks.

Warning from Bangladesh's Army Chief

Speaking at a military function, General Wakar-uz-Zaman stated, "The chaos we see today is, to some extent, of our own making." He also expressed concern about the state of the police force, stating that officers, from junior to senior ranks, are operating in a climate of fear due to colleagues facing lawsuits or imprisonment.

General Zaman said, "The growing atmosphere of violence and chaos in society could jeopardize the country's sovereignty." This statement raises questions about Bangladesh's security situation and could further exacerbate the crisis.

Appeal for Peace Targets Politics

General Zaman appealed to Bangladeshi citizens for peace, stating that if political parties continue to fight amongst themselves, the country's independence and integrity will be at risk. He also noted that political parties are engaged in a blame game, allowing troublemakers to exploit the situation.

He also mentioned that this dangerous situation could impact student-led movements.

Possibility of Elections in Bangladesh

General Wakar-uz-Zaman also commented on the upcoming elections. He stated, "I have already said that the elections might take 18 months, and we are moving in that direction." However, he also mentioned that Professor Yunus is working towards this, but offered no official statement regarding the elections.

Meanwhile, the Yunus government has announced that the next general elections in Bangladesh will be held by the end of this year or early 2026. This announcement may further complicate the electoral process and the country's political crisis.

Will the Yunus Government Fall?

Amidst Bangladesh's escalating political crisis and the army chief's warning, speculation about the future of the Yunus government has intensified. Opposition parties are continuously pressuring the government, and the army's statement has further deepened political instability.
