Like every year, Vat Savitri Vrat, a festival of special significance for married women, will be observed on Monday, May 26th, 2025. This fast is performed to pray for the long life, good health, and happiness of their husbands. Traditional beliefs associate this festival with the new moon or full moon day of the Jyeshtha month.

However, there are differing opinions regarding the date of this Vrat in various scriptures. According to the Narada Purana, this Vrat can be observed on both the new moon and full moon days, known as Vat Amavasya and Vat Purnima respectively. The Skanda Purana, on the other hand, recommends observing it on the full moon, while the Nirnaya Sindhu text considers the new moon day to be the most auspicious.

Religious Significance of Vat Savitri Vrat

The Vat Savitri Vrat symbolizes the unwavering devotion, dedication, and wisdom of Goddess Savitri. Legend has it that on this day, Savitri secured her husband Satyavan's life from Yama, the god of death. Impressed by her devotion and courage, Yama not only restored Satyavan's life but also granted him three boons. The Vat tree, also known as the Banyan tree, holds special significance in this Vrat.

It is considered a symbol of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh – the Trimurti. Brahma is believed to reside in its roots, Vishnu in its trunk, and Shiva in its branches. This is why women circumambulate the Vat tree, expressing their faith.

Vrat Puja Method and Tradition

  • Observing women take a bath before sunrise and purify their bodies with sesame and gooseberry water.
  • They adorn themselves with sixteen adornments (Solah Shringar), wear a new saree, and apply vermillion (sindur) on their foreheads.
  • The puja is performed under the Vat tree, where women circumambulate the tree and wrap it with red or yellow thread.
  • The tradition involves offering water, rice, flowers, fruits, and sweets and listening to the story of Goddess Savitri.
  • After the puja, women seek blessings from elderly women and other married women in the household.
  • If a Banyan tree is unavailable, symbolic worship can be performed using an image.

Vat Savitri Vrat Katha in Brief

King Ashwapati's daughter, Savitri, chose Satyavan, a king with a short lifespan, as her husband. Narada Muni warned her, but Savitri remained resolute. She challenged Yama to restore her husband's life and ultimately pleased him with her devotion, saving Satyavan's life. This story conveys the message that true devotion and determination can overcome any obstacle.

Importance of Charity

On Vat Savitri Vrat, women also donate food, clothes, and money. It is believed that the charitable deeds performed on this day yield manifold benefits and bring happiness and prosperity to life.
