New Delhi: Thawabur Hussain Rana, mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks and a close associate of Lashkar-e-Taiba in Pakistan, appeared in court on Monday. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) requested the court to extend Rana's custody by 12 more days, a request the court reserved its judgment on after hearing arguments.
Rana was presented before the court after the completion of his 18-day custody. He was produced before Judge Chandrajit Singh amidst tight security.
Rana's Role in the 26/11 Attacks
The terrorist attacks in Mumbai on November 26, 2008, shocked not only India but the entire world. A total of 174 people were killed, and over 300 were injured. He was arrested in the US in 2009 and subsequently convicted by an Indian court in 2011. However, Rana was in the US at the time, and the US Supreme Court approved his extradition in 2023.
Following this, in February 2025, US President Donald Trump finalized the decision for his return to India. A special NIA team played a crucial role in bringing Rana back to India, with officers like Ashish Batra, Prabhat Kumar, and Jaya Roy of the Jharkhand cadre of the IPS making special efforts.

Thawabur Hussain Rana is a Pakistani-Canadian citizen born in Pakistan. He became a permanent resident of Canada in the 1990s and later obtained Canadian citizenship. He initially worked as a doctor in the Pakistan Army but later started an immigration consultancy business in Chicago.
Rana has been repeatedly implicated in having links with Lashkar-e-Taiba and has been accused of involvement in Pakistani terrorist activities. His name surfaced as one of the main conspirators in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, making him a significant target for Indian authorities.
Rana's Trial in India
Rana's trial has commenced in India, and the NIA has presented him before the court. The NIA claims that they require 12 more days of custody to further interrogate him and obtain more information about the conspiracy behind the Mumbai attacks.
